How to tie your self-tie bow tie

Morning show host Mikkel Krüger always bravely steps up :-)

Michelle, who was also a host on Go'morgen for a decade, asked me a question the other day, "David, why is it so difficult to tie a bow tie?"

I hadn't thought about it before, that it's difficult to learn something so simple: But the answer is obvious;

Eliminate Mirror image and hidden under the chin, then you can learn it

We learn it mirrored, hidden under the chin. I have taught far over 500,000 people how to tie a bow tie. It's my absolute specialty, a rather slender specialty, but popular because everyone thinks it's difficult. By sharing this video and explanation, I'm undermining my own specialty, but what the heck. If it helps some of our nearly 15,000 followers, then I'm happy to be unemployed.

Start by tying the bow tie on your leg, with your leg up and just below the knee. From here, you can calmly study your challenges and progress right there on your leg in front of you.

Tie it 10 or more times if you need some practice. You should almost be able to tie it with your eyes closed. THEN you're ready to tie it under your chin, mirrored at home. You'll get there.

Tie it tightly, no sloppy loose knots. Too much "length" goes to waste. It makes it harder to tie beautifully if there isn't much left to pull. Try to keep your swings and wraps in a lightly tight style. Then you can more easily adjust it and have something to pull at the end.

I have taught ambassadors, ministers, and Oscar-winning directors how to tie a self-tie bow tie. Everyone needs help, and if you learn it the David K. way, you'll find it even easier to tie one for a gentleman in need.
